2020 In Hindsight

When we left school on March 5th for a break,

Who knew how many changes our world leaders would make!

Where were you when the world seemed to change?

We were headed home from a Salt Lake spring break trip that day...

Time seemed to freeze while we held it together-

Not understanding then how many months we would weather.

But here we are now with no real end in sight;

Just a clearer conviction of things worth our fight.

Kierstyn, a month from 16 and now ready to drive,

Has been in online school for 9 months yet continues to thrive.

Transforming this year in significant ways;

A teenage rebellion overcome by God’s shining light rays.

One of the greatest blessings of 2020 in hindsight;

And the gift of her song brings joy on the darkest of nights.

Ellie, now 12, continues to grow and advance in her many forms of art.

And in an upcoming school play her theatric abilities have landed her a part!

We’ve managed to keep our moving girl active while the world seemed put on pause:

Softball, agility and tennis are her outlets, along with anything that may have paws.

Her love for reading blesses us as she shares her gift out loud;

No library storyteller or teacher has this gift, it really make us proud.

Evan may need rehab for his love of the game;

I know many other parents who are feeling the same!

After too much virtual connection in 2020 led to online play,

We have to decide for next year if fortnite is really here to stay…

(which is something about which I continue to pray!)

So much got cancelled but Flag football played on;

Grateful to grid iron, brave families and the open field lawns.

Jason hikes and lifts weights and continues to be

Disciplined and focused and a model for me.

His loyalty to his company and commitment to us

Shines through this year as he and the kids try to ‘beat the bus’.

Now that they are back in school

He shows everyone how much dads rule!

At making lunches and making time;

For love and laughter and buying me limes.

Last December I looked ahead at the year that was to come:

I chose the word MARGIN so I wouldn’t have to be numb.

Numb to the things I was missing at my pace.

Numb to the casualties of winning the “race”.

Margin I got in ‘unprecedented’ ways;

Margin I pray now decidedly stays!

My NO‘s come now as easy as YES’s

The growth that’s come has transformed my essence.

We grew a garden and rode bikes through the ‘hood’.

We did some things I never knew we could.

We became the church as we worshiped at home.

We extend our light to help the kingdom to come!

We have come to the end of this year that we’re living;

And move into the next with a deeper spirit of giving.
